PNG to JPG: what the conversion actually does

PNG stores every pixel exactly; JPG throws away detail your eye is bad at noticing. Converting PNG to JPG typically cuts a photograph to a fifth or a tenth of its size. The trade is permanent: transparency becomes a white background, and fine text or sharp graphic edges pick up visible artefacts.

How to convert PNG to JPG

  1. 1Drop your .png files above. Screenshots, exports and camera photos all work.
  2. 2Set quality — 85-92 for photographs, higher if the PNG contains text or line art.
  3. 3Convert and download. Compare the before and after sizes shown on each card.

When PNG to JPG is the right call

PNG is a lossless format, which is exactly what you want for anything with hard edges: screenshots, diagrams, UI mockups, logos, pixel art. It is exactly what you do not want for a photograph, because lossless compression of continuous-tone data produces enormous files. A 12-megapixel photo saved as PNG is routinely 15-25 MB; the same photo as a quality-90 JPG is 2-4 MB and looks the same on any screen.

So the useful rule is about content, not format. If the image is a photograph, converting to JPG is nearly free. If it is a screenshot of text, converting to JPG costs you legibility for a size saving you may not need.

The email and upload-limit case

Most of the traffic to this page comes from a size limit. Gmail attaches up to 25 MB per message, many contact forms cap at 5 MB, and job application portals often cap at 2 MB per file. A handful of PNG screenshots will blow past all of those. Converting to JPG at quality 85 and, if needed, resizing the long edge to 1600-2000 pixels will get almost any set of images under a 5 MB limit without them looking degraded on screen.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas API, so the image never leaves your device and there is no queue, no size cap and no account.

Three mistakes to avoid

Converting a logo with a transparent background

You will get a white rectangle behind it. Keep the PNG, or convert to WEBP, which keeps alpha and is still much smaller.

Converting a screenshot of text at low quality

JPEG artefacts cluster exactly where contrast is highest, which on a screenshot is every letter. Use quality 92+ or leave it as PNG.

Expecting a smaller file from a tiny PNG

For small flat-colour graphics, PNG often beats JPG outright. The JPG can come out larger. Check the sizes shown after conversion.
