TIFF to PNG: what the conversion actually does

PNG is the lossless way out of TIFF: every pixel of an 8-bit RGB TIFF survives, transparency is kept, and the result opens in every browser, editor, slide deck and website builder. It is the right choice for scanned text, diagrams, logos and screenshots; use JPG instead when the TIFF is a photograph and file size matters most.

How to convert TIFF to PNG

  1. 1Drop your .tif or .tiff files above.
  2. 2Leave the output on PNG (it is lossless, so there is no quality slider to worry about).
  3. 3Convert and download. Multi-page TIFFs yield the first page.

What changes in conversion

16-bit and CMYK TIFFs are converted to 8-bit RGB, because that is what browsers and screens use. Layers are flattened. Everything else, including the exact pixel values of an 8-bit RGB image and its transparency, carries over.

Resolution in pixels does not change. The DPI tag that tells a printer how large to print the image is a separate setting; a 2550 × 3300 pixel scan is still 8.5 × 11 inches at 300 DPI after conversion. Check or change it with the DPI tools if a print form insists on a value.

Why the PNG can be bigger or smaller than the TIFF

Both formats can be lossless, so size depends on the compression each one uses. An uncompressed TIFF usually shrinks a lot as PNG, because PNG's DEFLATE compression is better than no compression at all. A TIFF that was already LZW or ZIP compressed may come out about the same size. A photographic TIFF stays large as PNG because noise and fine texture do not compress losslessly; that is the case where JPG is the better target.

Scans of black-and-white documents are the best case for PNG: large areas of flat white compress extremely well, and text edges stay crisp enough for OCR and for zooming in on a screen.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas API, so the image never leaves your device and there is no queue, no size cap and no account.

Three mistakes to avoid

Picking JPG for a scanned document

JPEG compression blurs the edges of letters and adds speckles around them. PNG keeps text sharp and is often small for mostly-white pages.

Expecting CMYK colours to match the printer's proof

PNG is RGB only. Use the PNG for screen review and keep sending the original TIFF to the print shop.

Converting only page one of a multi-page scan

A browser converter reads the first image in the file. Keep a scanned contract or form together as a PDF instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about image conversion.

Drop your .tif or .tiff files above, keep the format on PNG and press Convert. Each file downloads as a PNG, or as a ZIP for a batch. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.

Yes for ordinary 8-bit RGB images: PNG compression is lossless, so every pixel matches. 16-bit and CMYK TIFFs are converted to 8-bit RGB, which is what screens and the web use.

Yes. A TIFF with an alpha channel becomes a PNG with the same transparent areas. JPG cannot do that, which is the main reason to pick PNG over JPG.

Choose PNG for scans of text, line art, screenshots, logos and anything with transparency; choose JPG for photographs where a much smaller file matters more than perfect pixels.

No. The TIFF is decoded and re-encoded inside your browser; the files never leave your device.

The converter saves the first page. Scanned multi-page documents are usually better kept together as a PDF.

Lossless PNG keeps every pixel, so a 300 DPI full-page scan stays big. Resize it or use JPG if you only need it for the screen.
