HEIC to JPG: what the conversion actually does

HEIC is what an iPhone saves by default — HEVC-compressed stills in a HEIF container, about half the size of the equivalent JPEG. It is also the reason a photo you AirDropped or emailed will not open on a Windows PC, in most web uploaders or on many Android phones. Converting to JPG makes the photo universally readable.

How to convert HEIC to JPG

  1. 1Drop the .heic or .heif files above. Photos straight from an iPhone work as-is.
  2. 2Leave quality at 90 — HEIC originals hold a lot of detail and it is worth keeping.
  3. 3Convert and download. Batches of a whole camera roll are fine.

Why iPhones save HEIC at all

Apple switched the default camera format to HEIC in iOS 11, in 2017. The format uses HEVC intra-frame coding, the same maths as H.265 video, which compresses a still roughly twice as efficiently as JPEG. It also carries things JPEG cannot: 10-bit colour, depth maps used for Portrait mode, Live Photo motion and multiple exposures in one file.

The cost is compatibility. HEVC is patent-encumbered, so support has to be licensed. Windows needs a paid codec from the Microsoft Store, many Android devices cannot decode it, and a large share of web upload forms reject the extension outright.

Live Photo motionStoredStill frame only

Stop your iPhone making them in the first place

If you would rather not convert every time: Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. The camera saves JPG from then on. Existing photos stay HEIC. Separately, Settings, Photos, and under Transfer to Mac or PC choose Automatic, which converts on export rather than sending the raw HEIC.

Most Compatible roughly doubles the storage each photo uses, which is the trade you are making.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas API, so the image never leaves your device and there is no queue, no size cap and no account.

Three mistakes to avoid

Expecting the Portrait-mode blur to survive

The blur you see on the iPhone is computed from a depth map stored alongside the image. JPG has nowhere to put it. If the blur was baked in by the Photos app it survives; if it is live, it does not.

Converting a Live Photo and losing the motion

You get the key frame. To keep the movement, export the Live Photo as a video from the Photos app instead.

Renaming .heic to .jpg

Changing the extension changes nothing about the bytes inside. The file still will not open. It has to be re-encoded.
