WEBP to PNG: what the conversion actually does

PNG is the right destination for a WEBP when the image has transparency or hard edges. PNG is lossless and has a full alpha channel, so a transparent logo stays transparent and a screenshot's text stays crisp — unlike a JPG conversion, which flattens alpha onto white and softens edges.

How to convert WEBP to PNG

  1. 1Drop your .webp files above.
  2. 2No quality slider is needed — PNG is lossless, so the output is pixel-exact.
  3. 3Convert and download. Expect the PNG to be considerably larger than the WEBP.

Why the PNG comes out bigger

WEBP's lossy mode discards data. PNG cannot — it stores every pixel and compresses the result with DEFLATE. Turning a lossy WEBP into a PNG does not restore the discarded detail; it simply stores what is left, artefacts included, without throwing anything further away. A 120 KB lossy WEBP photo can easily become a 1.5 MB PNG.

That is not a fault in the conversion. It is the price of a lossless container. If size matters more than edge fidelity, convert to JPG instead.

Transparency behaviour

WEBP supports an 8-bit alpha channel and so does PNG, so partial transparency — soft shadows, anti-aliased curves, feathered edges — transfers intact. This is the main reason to pick PNG over JPG as a destination.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas API, so the image never leaves your device and there is no queue, no size cap and no account.

Three mistakes to avoid

Expecting a lossy WEBP to become sharp again

Conversion cannot recover detail the original encoder deleted. PNG preserves what is there; it does not restore what is gone.

Using PNG for every photo on a website

Page weight will balloon. PNG is for graphics and transparency; photos belong in JPG or WEBP.

PNG holds one frame. APNG exists but is not what a standard converter produces — you will get the first frame.

PNG supports lossless compression and transparency, making it ideal for graphics, logos, and screenshots where quality matters most.

Yes! PNG fully supports transparency (alpha channels), unlike JPG. Converting WEBP to PNG preserves any transparent areas.

No. All conversion happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device.

Absolutely! Drag and drop multiple WEBP files and convert them all at once, then download as a ZIP.

PNG uses lossless compression (no quality loss) and supports transparency. JPG uses lossy compression for smaller files but doesn't support transparency.
