TIFF to JPG: what the conversion actually does

TIFF is the archival and print format: lossless, high bit depth, often CMYK, frequently multi-page. It is also enormous and unsupported by most websites, email clients and phones. Converting to JPG produces something you can actually send, upload and preview — at a fraction of the size.

How to convert TIFF to JPG

  1. 1Drop your .tif or .tiff files above.
  2. 2Use quality 90 or higher — TIFFs usually hold detail worth keeping.
  3. 3Convert and download. Multi-page TIFFs yield the first page.

Who hands you a TIFF

  • Scanners and document management systems, especially in law, medicine and government.
  • Print shops and prepress, where CMYK and 16-bit colour matter.
  • Photographers exporting an uncompressed master from Lightroom or Capture One.
  • Satellite, microscopy and GIS imagery, often as GeoTIFF.

What conversion changes

The CMYK point matters for print work. A CMYK TIFF converted to an RGB JPG will not colour-match the press proof. Send the printer the TIFF and use the JPG for review copies only.

Multi-page TIFFs

A scanned contract is often one TIFF containing every page. A browser-based converter reads the first image in the file, so you get page one. For a whole document, convert the TIFF to PDF with your scanner software or a PDF tool instead — that keeps the pages together and stays text-searchable if the scan was OCR'd.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas API, so the image never leaves your device and there is no queue, no size cap and no account.

Three mistakes to avoid

Sending a print shop the JPG

You have thrown away the bit depth and the CMYK data the press needs. Send the TIFF.

Converting a multi-page scan and losing pages

Only the first page survives. Use a TIFF-to-PDF route for documents.

Deleting the TIFF afterwards

It is the master. The JPG is a delivery copy and cannot be turned back into one.

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a high-quality, lossless image format commonly used in photography, printing, and scanning. Files are typically very large because they preserve all image data.

TIFF files are often 10-50x larger than JPGs. Converting to JPG dramatically reduces file size for sharing via email, social media, or web uploads while maintaining excellent visual quality.

No. All conversion happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your TIFF files never leave your device — completely private.

Yes! Upload multiple TIFF files simultaneously, batch convert them all to JPG, and download as a ZIP archive.

JPG is a lossy format, so some data is lost. However, at 85-95% quality, the difference is virtually imperceptible. Use the quality slider to find your ideal balance.

This tool converts the first page of a TIFF file. For multi-page TIFFs, each page would need to be saved separately before conversion.

JPG files are typically 90-95% smaller than TIFF equivalents. A 30MB TIFF scan might convert to a 1-3MB JPG with excellent visual quality.
