Why WEBP files refuse to open

WEBP is Google's web image format. Websites love it because it is roughly 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG, so when you right-click and save a picture from a modern site you often end up with a .webp file. The catch is that desktop software was slow to catch up: older Windows Photos builds, macOS Preview before Ventura, Microsoft Office, most printing kiosks and plenty of upload forms still reject it.

Browsers, however, have supported WEBP for years — which is why opening the file on this page works even when double-clicking it on your desktop does not.

Turn it into a file everything accepts

Save as JPG for photos you want to email, print or upload, and PNG when you need to keep a transparent background. For a batch of files at once, use the WEBP to JPG converter or the WEBP to PNG converter. The full troubleshooting walkthrough for Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android lives in WEBP images not opening.
