Why resizing a GIF is harder than resizing a photo

An animated GIF is not one picture but a stack of frames, and most GIFs save space by storing only the part of each frame that changed, laid over the frames before it. Shrink those patches one at a time and they stop lining up, which is why some quick resizers leave ghosting or flicker behind. This tool first rebuilds every frame in full, exactly as a browser would show it, then scales the whole frame with high-quality smoothing and encodes a fresh GIF — each frame keeps its original delay, and the loop setting is kept as endless.

Keeping the shape right

Leave one side at 0 and the other is worked out from the original shape. A 480 × 270 GIF resized to a width of 128 becomes 128 × 72, because 270 × 128 ÷ 480 = 72. When you set both sides and the shape differs, choose what gives: Crop to fill trims the edges (a 480 × 270 GIF cropped square keeps the middle 270 × 270, starting 105 px in from the left, then scales it to your size), Fit inside keeps everything and pads the rest with transparency, and Stretch distorts it to the exact box.

Emoji and emote sizes

The presets set the size, the crop and a file-size check in one step. These were each platform's published limits in September 2026; platforms change them, so check the upload screen if a file is refused.

What happens to file size

GIF size follows pixel count far more than it follows dimensions: halve the width and height and only a quarter of the pixels remain, and the file shrinks by a broadly similar proportion (not exactly, because how well each frame compresses depends on the picture). On top of that, pixels that do not change from one frame to the next are written as transparent, so a GIF with a still background shrinks further. If you still need it smaller — a Discord emoji over 256 KB, say — the GIF compressor reduces colours and frames until it fits a target.

When a GIF is the wrong format

For posting a clip on social media, a video is far smaller and sharper: the GIF to MP4 converter handles that. For still images — JPG, PNG or WebP — use the image resizer, and to turn an animated WebP sticker into a GIF first, use WebP to GIF.
