What Is a WEBP File — and Why Did You Just Download One?
You saved a picture from a website and got a .webp file your computer refuses to open. Nothing is broken. Here is what the format is, why sites use it, and how to turn it into something normal.
The short answer
WEBP is an image format Google released in 2010 for the web. It stores the same picture as a JPG in about 25–35% fewer bytes, and unlike JPG it can also hold transparency and animation. Websites adopted it to load faster, so when you right-click and save an image from a modern site, WEBP is what you get.
Why your computer will not open it
Browsers have supported WEBP for years; desktop software was far slower. Older Windows Photos builds, macOS Preview before Ventura, Microsoft Office, most printing kiosks, older Photoshop versions and a lot of upload forms all still reject the extension. The file itself is perfectly valid — the app just does not recognise it. You can open one right now in the WEBP viewer.
Lossy and lossless in one format
WEBP has two modes. Lossy WEBP works like JPG, discarding detail the eye barely notices, and is what most websites serve for photographs. Lossless WEBP works like PNG, keeping every pixel exactly, and typically comes out about 26% smaller than the equivalent PNG. Both modes support an alpha channel, which is why a transparent logo can be a lossy WEBP — something JPG can never do.
| WEBP | JPG | PNG | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical photo size | Smallest | ~30% larger | Much larger |
| Transparency | Yes | No | Yes |
| Animation | Yes | No | No (APNG only) |
| Opens everywhere | No | Yes | Yes |
| Good for printing | No | Yes | Yes |
When you should keep WEBP
- You are building a website and want faster pages and better Core Web Vitals.
- You need a small transparent graphic — a logo, badge or icon overlay.
- You are replacing an animated GIF; WEBP is dramatically smaller.
When you should convert it
- Printing — print shops and home printer software rarely accept WEBP.
- Uploading to forms, marketplaces, job portals or government sites.
- Editing in older desktop software.
- Sending to someone whose computer will simply refuse to open it.
Convert to JPG for photos with the WEBP to JPG converter (or keep an animation with WEBP to GIF), or to PNG when you need to keep a transparent background with the WEBP to PNG converter. Both run entirely in your browser, handle batches and never upload your files.
Does converting lose quality?
Going from lossy WEBP to JPG re-encodes the picture, so in theory you lose a little. At quality 90 or above the difference is invisible in normal viewing. Converting lossless WEBP to PNG loses nothing at all. What you should avoid is a chain of repeated conversions — each one compounds the loss. More on that in the image compression guide.
Is WEBP being replaced?
AVIF compresses even harder and now has broad browser support, so new sites often serve AVIF with a WEBP fallback. WEBP is not going anywhere though — it has the wider install base and encodes far faster. The comparison is laid out in WEBP vs AVIF, and WEBP vs JPG covers the older matchup.
Quick reference
- Can't open it? Drag it into any browser tab, or use the WEBP viewer.
- Need it for print or upload? Convert to JPG.
- Needs transparency? Convert to PNG.
- Building a site? Keep WEBP and serve it with a JPG fallback.
- Browser keeps saving WebP? See how to save as JPG instead.
- WebP or PNG? WebP vs PNG compares size, transparency and support.
