Why Print Screen never gives you a file
On Windows, the Print Screen key copies the screen to the clipboard and nothing more. Windows + Shift + S does the same for a selection. The image only becomes a file when something pastes it and saves it — traditionally Paint or the Snipping Tool, which both default to PNG. This page is that paste target, and it saves JPG.

JPG or PNG for a screenshot?
JPG is the right choice when the screenshot has to fit an email, a form with a size limit or a chat app: it is typically a fifth of the PNG size. Keep quality at 92 or above for text. For diagrams with thin lines or a transparent background, PNG stays sharper. Already have screenshot files saved?
