BMP to JPG: what the conversion actually does

BMP stores pixels with little or no compression, so a screen-sized bitmap can run to several megabytes and a scan to tens of megabytes. Converting to JPG typically reduces the file by 90-95% with no visible difference on screen, and produces something email and web forms will actually accept.

How to convert BMP to JPG

  1. 1Drop your .bmp files above.
  2. 2Quality 85-92 covers almost every use. Go higher for scanned text.
  3. 3Convert and download — the size drop is usually dramatic.

Where BMP files still come from

In every one of those cases the BMP was chosen because it is trivially simple to write, not because anyone needed the file to be that large.

  • Older Windows applications and the classic Paint save dialog.
  • Scanner and fax software defaults, especially on office multifunction devices.
  • Screen-capture utilities configured for lossless output.
  • Industrial, medical and laboratory equipment exporting raw frames.
  • Game and CAD asset pipelines that use uncompressed textures.

How much smaller

BMP size is arithmetic, not compression: width times height times bytes per pixel, plus a small header. A 24-bit 1920 by 1080 image is always about 5.9 MB regardless of what it shows.

When to choose PNG instead

If the BMP is a screenshot, a scan of text or a diagram, PNG will also shrink it enormously — often to a tenth — while staying lossless and keeping every letter sharp. Choose JPG for photographs and PNG for anything where edges matter.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas API, so the image never leaves your device and there is no queue, no size cap and no account.

Three mistakes to avoid

Converting a scanned document at low quality

Text on a scan is the worst case for JPEG. Use quality 92 or higher, or convert to PNG.

Losing the alpha channel from a 32-bit BMP

Some BMPs carry transparency. JPG cannot. Use PNG if the file has an alpha channel.

Assuming a small BMP will get much smaller

Tiny icons and flat-colour bitmaps sometimes come out bigger as JPG. Check the result.

BMP (Bitmap) is an uncompressed image format that produces very large files. It's primarily used in legacy Windows applications.

BMP files are extremely large because they're uncompressed. Converting to JPG can reduce file size by 90-95% while maintaining good visual quality.

Absolutely. All conversion happens in your browser. Files never leave your device.

Yes! Upload multiple BMP files at once, convert them all to JPG, and download as a ZIP.

Dramatically smaller. A 10MB BMP file typically converts to a 200-500KB JPG at high quality — that's a 95%+ reduction.
