Why convert a GIF to PNG

GIF and PNG are both lossless, but PNG is the better still-image format: it stores up to 16.7 million colours and smooth alpha transparency, every editor opens it, and it is what design tools, slide decks, app stores and print shops expect. Converting is the right move when you want to edit a GIF, use one frame as a thumbnail or sticker, or pull an animation apart into frames for a game, a video editor or a sprite sheet.

Three ways to export an animated GIF

OptionYou getGood for
First frameOne PNGThumbnails, previews, a still of a meme
Every frameA ZIP of numbered PNGs (frame-01, frame-02…)Video editors, frame-by-frame editing, picking the best moment
Sprite sheetOne PNG with the frames in a grid, left to right, top to bottomGame engines, CSS sprite animations, contact sheets

Frames are numbered with leading zeros so they sort in the right order in any file manager, and each one is the full composed picture rather than the small changed patch many GIFs store — so frame 37 looks exactly as it does when the GIF plays.

File size: PNG vs GIF

For a single frame, a PNG is usually about the same size as the GIF or a little smaller, because PNG's compression is more modern. A folder of every frame is naturally much bigger than one GIF, which stores only what changes between frames. If you just want a smaller animation, the GIF compressor or GIF to MP4 is the better tool; to go the other way, PNG to GIF turns PNGs back into a still or animated GIF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about image conversion.

Drop the GIF above. A still GIF becomes one PNG straight away. For an animated GIF, choose the first frame, every frame (downloaded together as a ZIP) or one sprite sheet with all the frames in a grid.

Yes. A GIF's transparent colour becomes fully transparent pixels in the PNG, so a sticker or logo keeps its see-through background.

It will look exactly the same — every pixel is copied without loss. PNG cannot add back colours a GIF threw away (GIF holds at most 256 colours per frame), but it will not add any new compression damage either, and you can edit it freely afterwards.

Animated GIFs often store only the part of each frame that changed. This page rebuilds every frame the way a browser plays it — applying each frame's disposal rule — so every PNG is the full picture.

Yes. Drop them all; each is converted with the same setting, and you can download everything together as one ZIP.

No. The GIF is decoded and the PNGs are written inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
