JPG to PNG: what the conversion actually does

Converting JPG to PNG gives you a lossless container: from that point on, every save is pixel-exact and no further compression artefacts are added. It does not remove the artefacts already baked into the JPG, and the file will get considerably larger. Do it when you are about to edit, annotate or composite the image.

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. 1Drop your .jpg or .jpeg files above.
  2. 2There is no quality setting — PNG stores every pixel as-is.
  3. 3Convert and download. Expect a file several times larger than the JPG.

The one thing this conversion cannot do

It cannot undo JPEG compression. When a photo was saved as JPG, the encoder discarded high-frequency detail and quantised the rest; that information is gone from the file. Converting to PNG faithfully preserves what remains — artefacts, banding and all — and simply stops anything further being lost.

So this is a forward-looking move. It protects the image from here on. It does not repair it.

When it is genuinely the right call

  • You are about to annotate a screenshot or a photo and will re-save it several times.
  • You are compositing the image into a design and want no generation loss at each step.
  • A tool or platform requires PNG — some documentation systems, some print-on-demand services, most favicon generators.
  • You need to add transparency to the image after removing a background.
  • You are archiving an edited version and want the edit stored exactly.

Size expectations

Note the last row: for flat-colour graphics PNG frequently beats JPG outright, because DEFLATE compresses large areas of identical colour extremely well while JPEG wastes bits on ringing around the edges.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas API, so the image never leaves your device and there is no queue, no size cap and no account.

Three mistakes to avoid

Expecting the image to look sharper

It will look identical. PNG preserves; it does not restore.

Uploading PNG photos to a website

Page weight goes up many times over for no visible gain. Use JPG or WEBP for photographs on the web.

Assuming the background is now transparent

PNG supports transparency; it does not create it. The background has to be removed in an editor first.

PNG is lossless, so it stays sharp through repeated edits, and it supports transparency. It is the right choice for logos, diagrams, screenshots and anything with text or hard edges.

Usually yes. PNG stores every pixel exactly, so a photo can grow several times larger. That is the trade for lossless quality.

No. A JPG has no transparent areas to recover — the white background stays white. To remove a background you need an editor.

Yes. Add as many JPGs as you like and download them all together as a ZIP.
