AVIF to JPG: what the conversion actually does

AVIF is the newest mainstream web image format — AV1 intra-frame coding, typically 20-30% smaller than WEBP and half the size of JPEG. Support in browsers is good; support in desktop software, uploaders and print workflows is not. Converting to JPG is how you get an AVIF into anything that is not a browser.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. 1Drop your .avif files above.
  2. 2Use quality 90 or higher — AVIF holds more detail than JPEG and you want to keep it.
  3. 3Convert and download.

Where AVIF comes from and why you have one

AVIF was published by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019 and rolled out across browsers between 2020 and 2023. Because it is royalty-free and compresses extremely well, large publishers and CDNs adopted it quickly. If you saved an image from a news site, a stock library or a modern e-commerce store and got a .avif, that is why.

Outside the browser the picture is different. Windows needs an extension from the Microsoft Store, many versions of Photoshop need a plugin, and a great many web forms, print services and marketplace uploaders reject the extension without explanation.

What the conversion costs

For an ordinary photograph destined for email, a document or a listing, none of those losses are visible. For HDR photography you are genuinely losing range, and it is worth keeping the AVIF as the master.

AVIF, WEBP or JPG for your own site

  • AVIF — best compression, best for large hero photographs, slower to encode.
  • WEBP — nearly as small, encodes fast, supported slightly more widely in tooling.
  • JPG — the fallback everything understands. Always keep one.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas API, so the image never leaves your device and there is no queue, no size cap and no account.

Three mistakes to avoid

Converting an HDR AVIF and calling the result flat

It is flat — JPEG is an 8-bit SDR format. That is a format limit, not a converter bug.

Using quality 70 on an AVIF photo

You are stacking JPEG artefacts on top of an image that was compressed well. Use 90 or above.

Assuming an .avif extension means a small file

Some encoders write near-lossless AVIF that is larger than a quality-90 JPEG. Check the sizes after conversion.
