SVG to PNG: what the conversion actually does

An SVG is a set of drawing instructions, not pixels. Rasterising it to PNG fixes it at one specific size, which is exactly what you need when a tool refuses vector files — favicons, app icons, marketplace listings, Word documents, presentation software and most social platforms all want a bitmap.

How to convert SVG to PNG

  1. 1Drop your .svg files above.
  2. 2Set the output width you need — the height follows the artwork's aspect ratio.
  3. 3Convert and download. For icon sets, run the file once per size you need.

Pick the size before you convert, not after

The whole advantage of SVG is that it is resolution independent: the same file draws crisply at 16 pixels and at 4,000. A PNG has one resolution. Enlarging it afterwards in an image editor interpolates pixels and produces soft edges, so it is always better to rasterise at the size you actually need — and, for screen use, at twice that size for high-density displays.

  • Favicon: 16, 32 and 48 pixels square.
  • Apple touch icon: 180 pixels square.
  • Android and PWA icons: 192 and 512 pixels square.
  • Social share image: 1200 by 630.
  • Print at 300 DPI: multiply the printed size in inches by 300.

What can go wrong with the source SVG

Converting text to outlines in your vector editor before exporting solves the font problem permanently and is worth doing for any logo you hand to other people.

  • No width, height or viewBox attribute — the renderer has no intrinsic size to work from and may produce a default 300 by 150 canvas.
  • Text drawn with a font that is not embedded — the machine doing the rasterising substitutes a different font and the layout shifts.
  • External images referenced by URL — blocked during rasterising, leaving gaps.
  • CSS in an external stylesheet rather than inside the SVG — the styling is simply not applied.

Transparency

PNG keeps the alpha channel, so an SVG with no background stays transparent. If you need a solid background, add a filled rectangle behind the artwork in the SVG before converting — that is more predictable than relying on a converter's background setting.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas API, so the image never leaves your device and there is no queue, no size cap and no account.

Three mistakes to avoid

Rasterising once and scaling up for every size

Every enlargement softens the edges. Go back to the SVG and rasterise again at the new size — it costs nothing.

Forgetting high-density screens

A 400-pixel-wide PNG in a 400-pixel-wide slot looks soft on any modern phone. Export at 800 and display at 400.

Assuming fonts travel with the file

They do not unless embedded. Outline the text before export.
