HEIC to PNG: what the conversion actually does

Converting an iPhone HEIC to PNG gives you a lossless copy that any software can open. Choose this over JPG when the photo is a screenshot, contains text, or is going into an editor for further work — PNG adds no compression artefacts, at the cost of a much larger file.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. 1Drop your .heic or .heif files above.
  2. 2No quality setting is needed — PNG is lossless.
  3. 3Convert and download. Expect files several times larger than the HEIC.

What the conversion keeps

PNG stores the decoded image exactly, so everything visible in the HEIC survives. What does not survive is the HEIC container's extra payloads: Portrait-mode depth maps, Live Photo motion and any secondary exposures. PNG has nowhere to put them, and neither does JPG.

HEIC is 10-bit; PNG can store 16 bits per channel, so unlike a JPG conversion there is no bit-depth truncation here if the encoder writes 16-bit output.

Why the file gets so much bigger

HEIC uses HEVC compression, which is about twice as efficient as JPEG and dramatically more efficient than PNG's DEFLATE. A 2 MB HEIC photo commonly becomes a 20-30 MB PNG. That is expected and is the price of losslessness — if size matters more than pixel exactness, convert to JPG.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas API, so the image never leaves your device and there is no queue, no size cap and no account.

Three mistakes to avoid

Using PNG for a whole camera roll

Hundreds of megabytes for no benefit. PNG is for the handful of images that need it.

Emailing the PNG

You will hit the attachment limit almost immediately. Send JPG.

Renaming the file instead of converting it

The extension is a label. The bytes inside are still HEVC and nothing will open them.
