PNG to WEBP: what the conversion actually does

WEBP is the only mainstream format that keeps PNG's alpha transparency while compressing like a photo format. Converting PNG to WEBP typically cuts 60-80% off the file size with transparency intact — which is why it is the right move for logos, icons and UI graphics on a website.

How to convert PNG to WEBP

  1. 1Drop your .png files above.
  2. 2Choose quality. For graphics with hard edges, 90 or above keeps them clean.
  3. 3Convert and download, then serve the WEBP with a PNG fallback.

Why this beats PNG to JPG for graphics

The usual reason to convert a PNG is size, and the usual destination is JPG. That works for photographs and fails for everything else: JPG has no alpha channel, so a transparent logo gains a white box, and JPEG's compression puts visible ringing around every hard edge and letter.

WEBP has neither problem. It carries a full 8-bit alpha channel, and its lossless mode compresses flat-colour graphics roughly 26% better than PNG while being mathematically identical to the original. Its lossy mode goes much further still and, at high quality settings, stays clean on text and edges in a way JPEG does not.

Serving it on a site

Use a picture element with the WEBP first and the PNG as the img fallback, and keep explicit width and height attributes so the browser reserves the space and nothing shifts as the page loads. WordPress has accepted WEBP uploads natively since version 5.8; Shopify, Wix and Squarespace convert on their own CDN, so on those platforms you can simply upload the PNG.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas API, so the image never leaves your device and there is no queue, no size cap and no account.

Three mistakes to avoid

Using a low quality setting on a logo

WEBP at 60 smears the edges of type and icons. Graphics want 90 or above; only photographs tolerate the low numbers.

Shipping WEBP with no fallback

Coverage is excellent but not total, and email clients are a separate world. Keep the PNG.

Converting favicons

Browsers want ICO, PNG or SVG for favicons. WEBP is not a favicon format.
