How to Scan Film Negatives and Get the Colours Back
You have a shoebox of negatives, a flatbed scanner and a folder of orange ghosts. Inverting them gives you something recognisable and strongly blue. Here is why, and how to fix it without buying anything.

The short answer: Two things are wrong with a naively inverted colour negative. The image is inverted, which is expected, and colour film carries a deliberate orange base layer that becomes a strong blue cast when you flip it. Removing that base before inverting — by normalising each colour channel against the brightest value in it — fixes the cast. Black and white negatives have no base and need only a plain inversion.
What the orange is
It is not fog, damage or a scanning error. Colour negative film carries a built-in orange mask, a set of coloured couplers in the emulsion that correct for unwanted absorptions in the cyan and magenta dye layers. Without it, colour reproduction in the print would be noticeably worse.
Printing labs accounted for it automatically because they printed through it. A scanner does not. So when you invert the scan, that orange becomes its complement — a strong blue — laid over the entire frame.
Removing the base, then inverting
The fix is to normalise each colour channel before flipping it. On a negative scan, the brightest value in each channel is the unexposed film base — the clear edge of the frame. Dividing each channel by its own maximum scales all three to a common reference, which removes the cast, and inverting after that produces a usable positive.
That is what the film mode in the negative converter does, and it is essentially what dedicated scanning software does under the hood. It gets you to something you can work with in one step rather than fighting colour balance by hand.
- Open the negative converter and load your scan.
- Choose the scanned film negative mode.
- Raise contrast — negatives are low contrast by design and 120 to 150% is normal, not a mistake.
- Adjust brightness to taste, then download as PNG if you intend to edit further.
Black and white negatives are easier
There is no orange mask on black and white film, so a plain full inversion is correct. Expect to add contrast — the same low-contrast design applies — but there is no colour cast to fight. Scan as greyscale rather than colour and the files are smaller and cleaner.
Scanner settings that make everything afterwards easier
- Resolution: 2400 dpi minimum for 35mm, 3200 or 4000 if the scanner offers it. A 35mm frame is only 36 by 24 millimetres, so resolution is the whole game.
- Turn off automatic colour correction and exposure for the first pass. You can always add correction; you cannot remove what the scanner baked in.
- Turn off dust removal initially too — infrared dust removal is excellent on colour film and damages black and white silver images.
- Save as TIFF or PNG, never JPG. Everything you do afterwards is easier on a lossless file.
- Scan in 16-bit if the option exists. Negatives are low contrast, and you are about to stretch them hard, which shows banding in 8-bit.
Physical handling
- Clean the negative and the scanner glass. Dust shows as bright white specks after inversion, which is far more obvious than dark ones.
- Keep the film flat. A film holder is worth having; curled negatives go soft at the edges.
- Handle by the edges only, with cotton gloves if you have them. Fingerprints on the emulsion are permanent.
- Work in order and label as you go. Nothing is more tedious than 400 unsorted scans.

A realistic expectation
Home scanning will not match a good drum scan or a dedicated film scanner, and getting colour exactly right across a mixed box of film stocks takes patience — each stock has a slightly different mask density, so settings that work for one roll need nudging for the next.
But for the actual purpose most people have — getting family photographs off decaying film and into something shareable before the negatives degrade further — a flatbed, a careful scan and a proper inversion get you a very long way for nothing.

Can I scan negatives with a phone?
Yes, by photographing them on a lightbox or against a bright even screen, then inverting. Quality is well below a flatbed, but it is fast, and for a first pass to see what is on a roll it works fine.
