How to compress an image to 50 KB

50 KB fits a clear head-and-shoulders photo comfortably. Around 600 to 800 pixels on the long side at a normal JPG quality usually lands under the limit, so a phone photo mostly needs resizing rather than heavy compression. The tool starts at up to 1,000 pixels, finds the highest quality that fits, and steps the dimensions down only if it has to.

A portrait photo fits at roughly 600 × 800 px; a landscape snapshot at roughly 900 × 600 px, depending on how much fine detail it has.

Watch out: Busy backgrounds — foliage, patterned wallpaper, crowds — cost far more bytes than plain walls. A plain background leaves more of the budget for the face.

How the tool decides

It first tries a high quality at the largest size allowed. If that is too big, it searches for the highest JPG (or WebP) quality that still fits. Only when quality would have to drop below about 50 does it reduce the pixel dimensions instead, because a slightly smaller sharp photo looks better than a full-size blocky one. The target is treated as 50,000 bytes so it passes checks that count a kilobyte as either 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.
