How to compress an image to 200 KB

200 KB is a comfortable budget for a full-width website photo: 1,600 to 1,920 pixels wide at a quality around 75–85 usually fits. It is also a common cap on document and application portals. What fits in 200 KB

A typical landscape photo fits at 1,600–1,920 px wide. Very detailed scenes may settle around 1,400 px.

Watch out: For websites, WebP at the same size looks noticeably better than JPG. Choose WebP output when the image is going on your own site.

How the tool decides

It first tries a high quality at the largest size allowed. If that is too big, it searches for the highest JPG (or WebP) quality that still fits. Only when quality would have to drop below about 50 does it reduce the pixel dimensions instead, because a slightly smaller sharp photo looks better than a full-size blocky one. The target is treated as 200,000 bytes so it passes checks that count a kilobyte as either 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.
